Musicals
have been an extremely distinct genre in film-making, there are songs, dances
and all those light-hearted comedies. All so entertaining.
Every
studio had a distinct type of musicals defined by their star actors and actresses. Paramount Pictures had Maurice Chalvier
directed by Ernst Lubitsch, Columbia had Rita Hayworth from "Pal Joey" (1957),
which was enough for them. Warner Brothers had Bubsy Bekerly as the dance
choreographer. MGM was the best, with a spread of talents from Howard Keel to Gene Kelly to
Judy Garland to Fred Astaire from the 40s to 50s. They were swelling. So is this genre.
